Our Ears

Dear Father, Your Word says that faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God (see Romans 10:17). We pray, Lord, that we will give ear to Your law and that we will incline our ears to the words of Your mouth (see Psalm 78:1) Lord, when You speak to us, we will listen and not rebel or turn away (see Isaiah 50:5).

Lord, we purpose to listen as You speak to us, for if the Israelites did not escape when they refused to listen to You, how much less shall we escape if we turn our backs on You, who cautions us (see Hebrews 12:25). Lord, we want ears that listen so that we may obey Your divine will. We shall come to You and hear and our souls will be revived, and You shall keep us because of your mercies (see Proverbs 25:12, Isaiah 55:3).

“Lord, we purpose to listen as You speak to us, for if the Israelites did not escape when they refused to listen to You, how much less shall we escape if we turn our backs on You, who cautions us.” The nudge here is that we are called to even a higher standard as we have the Holy Spirit within us – making us indeed a temple for God. I think of the Scripture that says to whom much is given, much is required. We are called to hear what God says to us, and then we are to give a response / action – hopefully a response of obedience, otherwise no action means that we are disobeying.

May I hear God speaking to me, and then respond in obedience.

I’ve recently been thinking more about whispers from God. Most of these thoughts came about because of the book The Power of a Whisper By Bill Hybels. Though I remember reading for the first time 1 Kings 19:11-13 and thinking to myself “Wow, what an intense and powerful moment.” Then a whisper, then God speaking, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” This moment took place during a difficult time in Elijah life. So much so that Elijah wanted death 1 Kings 19:4.

As followers of Christ, we are called to deny ourselves, carry our cross, to lose our life so that we can find it in Him (Matthew 16:24-25). We hear by reading His Word, be still and listen. At time we may hear a whisper, then a voice “What are you doing here?”
