Armor of God – The Belt of Truth

As followers of Christ, we face a powerful enemy and cannot overcome him in our own power or with our own skills. Instead, our Lord has equipped us with weapons for the battle sufficient to wage and win it. Defensive weapons are designed to protect us from the attacks of our adversary. Offensive weapons are designed to spread the kingdom of God from our communities throughout the world.

Paul, while in prison for his faith, examined the armor of Roman legionaries during his life in the Roman Empire. With the knowledge of the spiritual battles we face day after day, he brings to life the visual and understanding that we need to be equipped with the power of God to stand firm.

2 Corinthians 4:8-9
We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.

Ephesians 6:14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist…

The roman soldiers belt was known as “The sword belt.” It played a crucial role in the effectiveness of a roman soldier’s armor. The belt was the place for a soldier to carry his sword. Imagine an overzealous soldier, charged for battle, runs to the battlefield, but then realizes he forgot his belt, consequently holding his weapon!

How do we use the belt of truth?
The belt of truth is the central piece of armor that we need when going into daily battle, it holds the essentials for success.  Truth should be securely buckled around our soul; it should be the source that holds us up. The belt was the first thing that the soldier put on. As followers of Christ, truth is the first thing we need in order to stand a faithful walk. Truth should cleave to us as a belt cleaves to our body. The more we know the truth the easier it will be to see the false.

Psalm 25:4-5
Show me your ways, O LORD, teach me your paths; guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.

Psalms 40:11
Do not withhold your mercy from me, O LORD; may your love and your truth always protect me.

Psalms 45:4
In your majesty ride forth victoriously in behalf of truth, humility and righteousness; let your right hand display awesome deeds.

John 17:15-18
My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world.

The analogy of a belt around the waist – and truth, brings up the thought of our core. When working out we talk about the core – and keeping the core strong and firm. If this is in place and is firm and strong you are able to withstand much. It often determines how much else you can do and what is your breaking point. So – as God’s truth is firmly in us and we have that belt buckled around our waist, our core – we are much better able to handle what Satan may throw our way.

Imagine if we lived with the belt of truth buckled around our waist, knowing the great and absolute truths that secure who we are in Him. Who will never leave us nor forsake us. Who’s love will never fail us. Who was and is and is to come. If God is for us, who can be against us?
